Tips for military veterans: How to find a job at Mastercard
Military veterans bring a unique set of skills and experiences that are highly valued at companies like Mastercard. From leadership and teamwork to problem-solving and adaptability, veterans possess qualities that align perfectly with our mission and values. This blog will guide you through tips to help you transition into a career at Mastercard.
1. Get to know our culture
It’s important to understand Mastercard’s culture and see if our work environment is the right fit for you:
2. Translate your military experience
Leadership, project management, and technical skills are just a few areas where military experience is directly applicable to roles at Mastercard. When writing your resume/CV, translate military jargon into terms that are easily understood in the corporate world. For example, instead of "platoon leader," you might say "team leader managing X number of people."
Understand the kinds of roles you would be interested in and suited for based on your skills and experiences. Examples include: Data analysis, general management, similar past roles, technical skills, sales etc.
3. Take advantage of free veteran resources
- Resume review - Indeed offers incredible resources for military veterans – at no cost – such as resume review where they’ll provide you with a complimentary 10-minute video with personalized recommendations to improve your resume.
- LinkedIn premium – In collaboration with SheerID, LinkedIn offers eligible members of the U.S. military community one year of access to LinkedIn Premium. With premium, you’ll have additional profile benefits, salary insights, competitive insights, as well as access to more than 10,000 courses on LinkedIn Learning including LinkedIn for Veterans, Transitioning to Civilian Employment, and Military to Student Life. Learn more and sign up here.
4. Network within Mastercard
Mastercard has many employees from around the world who are military veterans and/or reservists. Connect with them on LinkedIn to learn more about what they do and how they could help you with your job search. You can find them by using the filters: Current Company = Mastercard + Past Company = [insert military branch]
Additionally, be sure to keep an eye on job fairs, webinars, and other events where Mastercard is recruiting. These are great opportunities to meet recruiters and current employees.
5. Tailor your resume/CV
Tailor your resume/CV to highlight the skills and experiences that match the specific job you're applying for. Try to tie as many of your accomplishments to the role requirements in the job posting. Whereas in the military a job description in and of itself is an accomplishment, try to ensure each resume/CV bullet has a clear result or impact (preferably quantifiable). Use metrics to demonstrate your impact in previous roles. For example, "Led a team of 20 in successfully completing X mission, resulting in Y outcome."
Additionally, military culture often emphasizes “we” when corporate resumes should focus on “I”. If your team did something under your leadership and/or you played a major role, emphasize that accomplishment.
Use the job posting guide to highlight your skills and experiences that closely match what the hiring manager is looking for. Additionally, if you have certifications, security clearances, and other skills or professional differentiators, it can be helpful to highlight those.
6. Apply strategically
Sign up for job alerts on Mastercard’s career site for specific roles or departments so you’re notified as soon as a job matching your criteria is posted. If you know someone at Mastercard who is willing to refer you to the role, that will help your application get noticed. Be sure to contact your referral prior to applying so that the Mastercard employee can submit your information as an official employee referral.
7. Follow up
After applying, reach out to the recruiter, hiring manager, or military contact at Mastercard to express your continued interest. This shows initiative and can help keep your application top of mind.
If you’re not selected, politely ask for feedback to understand how you can improve for the next opportunity.
We salute your service, your dedication, and your unwavering commitment. We know the incredible skills and values you've gained through your military experience, and we invite you to unlock your next mission at Mastercard.
